When inactive, the herpes virus lays dormant in your nervous system; either at the base of your spine or your neck. When the virus is activated, it travels to the surface of your skin and this is what is known as a herpes outbreak. Now the key to truly living herpes free is to AVOID outbreaks altogether. Preventing herpes outbreaks can be done with simple changes to your diet amongst other things.

Both L-Lysine and L-Arginine play a distinctive role in the reproduction of the herpes simplex virus. The sole purpose of the herpes virus is to make millions of copies of itself.

Nothing more, nothing less.

After infecting a human host, the virus retreats down the nerve fibers to the nearest neural junction or ‘ganglion’. Once there, they lie dormant until conditions favor viral replication.
Every so often, a scouting party is sent to the site of the original invasion.

The scouts invade a few cells and check for the needed conditions and supplies in order to set up a new cellular “manufacturing plant”. (This is where the human victim detects prodromal symptoms).

This consists of:

A weakened immune defense system.

An ample supply of Arginine (an amino acid essential for viral replication).

A high acidic/low oxygen biological environment.

If the conditions favor replication, the invasion begins; if not, the scouting party retreats back to the surface and initiates a shedding action. When conditions are perfect, the invading organisms travel up the nerves and attack by penetrating the Arginine rich cells.

Once inside, they hi-jack the host DNA and convert the cell into a virus manufacturing plant. This new production facility works like a dedicated Xerox machine with the copy counter set to millions. When the Arginine is finally depleted, the cluster of cells making up the herpes blister bursts.

This splays the new virus copies out to the surrounding skin. The sole purpose of the newly cloned organisms is to infect a fresh host and repeat the replication cycle.

How does L-Lysine Fit Into the Picture?

Good question!

Both L-Lysine and L-Arginine compete for the same limited space in the cellular structure. L-Lysine takes precedence over L-Arginine. If there’s more L-Lysine than Arginine, the L-Lysine displaces the Arginine, thereby creating unfavorable conditions for viral replication.

On the other hand, if there’s an oversupply of Arginine, conditions favor viral replication.

However…

If the human host detects the prodromal symptoms and takes in additional L-Lysine. The newcomers travel to the cells and displace the Arginine. When the invading herpes forerunners discover that there is insufficient Arginine present, the impending invasion is aborted.

To summarize:

The herpes virus must consume the proteins contained in Arginine in order to replicate.

L-Lysine initiates a quenching action against the herpes virus by depriving it of the Arginine used as an essential building block for new viruses.

Both Lysine and Arginine occupy the same location in the human cell.

Excessive L-Lysine ‘bumps’ Arginine from the human cell.

A high Lysine to Arginine ratio inhibits viral replication.

L-Lysine helps to avert cellular destruction, thereby either limiting the formation of herpes lesions or preventing them altogether.

An alkaline and oxygen rich cellular environment will prevent viral replication.

Diet and Lysine.

Both L-Lysine and L-Arginine are essential amino acids. The human body cannot produce these amino acids, so they must be obtained either from the food we eat or from supplemental sources. As long as we have more Lysine than Arginine in our system, we’re in good shape.

Some scientists recommend a 60/40 ratio for optimal results in dampening or preventing herpes viral replication. A sensible diet will enable us to maintain the correct balance between the two; therefore it’s important for us to be able to identify Lysine rich/Arginine poor foods.

James M. Scutero compiled a list showing the ratio of L-Lysine to L-Arginine Foods. He transcribed and calculated the list using data from Agricultural Handbook, 1-23, U.S. Department of Agriculture. The list was further refined by Renee Kohn of San Diego Homeopathy. The San Diego Homeopathy PDF document can be downloaded at sandiegohomeopathy.com.

I suggest you print out the document and keep it handy. It will act as a quick reference when compiling your grocery shopping list and arranging your weekly menu.

L-Lysine Supplements

Additional L-Lysine supplements are an important part of your herpes cure. Step up your L-Lysine intake to about 3000 milligrams a day when you first detect prodromal symptoms (tingling, itching or pain). This will either prevent an impending outbreak, or greatly reduce the severity and duration of the attack.

If you do a search, you will find a plethora of L-Lysine supplements for sale on the Internet.

Avoiding herpes outbreaks is entirely possible with simple changes to your diet and fitness routine. Fortunately, these herpes treatments are natural and effective. Doing small things like avoiding caffeine, or excercising more can tremendously reduce the number of herpes outbreaks you experience over the course of time.

Herpes is a virus (like that of cold, fever) that resides within our body, but our body immunity system constantly fights and prevents the herpes breakout. The antibodies produced in the body always keep the herpes virus in check. It is one of the most common sexually transmitted disease (STD) in the world. This viral outbreak is often reflected in the mouth and the genital areas. It can also occur as cold sores in the form of small blisters that are painful leading to oozing and itching. Sometimes ocular herpes also occurs and if not treated properly can damage the cornea.

Causes

Two types of herpes simplex virus (HSV) namely HSV type 1 and HSV type 2 are responsible for the infections.

1. HSV 1 causes cold sores around the mouth and fever. This infection spreads due to oral sex.

2. HSV 2 causes painful blisters and small ulcers around the genital areas both in men and women and is a STD.

3. Kissing, intimate contacts can spread the infection from person to person.

4. Stress, hormonal imbalance, low immunity system, pregnancy can trigger herpes infection.

Though herpes is contagious, but it does not spread through contacts with towels or other personal objects as the virus cannot survive outside the body.

Cures

Apart from the antibiotic pills and ointments prescribed by the medicos, the most important factor in curing and controlling herpes is to maintain a good immune system of the body by avoiding stress, unhealthy life styles and taking vitamin and nutrient rich diet. Some natural cures are very effective in treating and preventing herpes outbreak in the long run.

1. Applying ice pack on the infected area curbs the disease to some extent.

2. Acidophilus in yoghurt is a good natural way to strengthen the immune system, so it must be a compulsory item in the diet.

3. Food rich in Vitamin C, E and zinc also boosts the immunity system of the body.

4. Drinking, smoking and high intake of sugar damages the immune system, so must be avoided.

5. Application of lemon balm, thyme on the affected areas prevents frequent outbreaks.

6. Applying baking powder on a cotton ball on the affected areas is beneficial in treating herpes.

7. Taking peppermint tea helps in reducing pain and fever.

8. Applying grated carrot wrapped in a cloth on the affected areas lessens the swelling of blisters and also the pain.

Whatever may be the mode of treatment, emphasis should always be in maintaining a healthy immune system of the body. Not only a good diet but regular physical exercises contribute a lot in prevention and controlling herpes.
