Both L-Lysine and L-Arginine play a distinctive role in the reproduction of the herpes simplex virus. The sole purpose of the herpes virus is to make millions of copies of itself.

After infecting a human host, the virus retreats down the nerve fibers to the nearest neural junction or ‘ganglion’. Once there, they lie dormant until conditions favor viral replication.

Both L-Lysine and L-Arginine compete for the same limited space in the cellular structure. L-Lysine takes precedence over L-Arginine. If there’s more L-Lysine than Arginine, the L-Lysine displaces the Arginine, thereby creating unfavorable conditions for viral replication. 

On the other hand, if there’s an oversupply of Arginine, conditions favor viral replication. 

However…

• L-Lysine helps to avert cellular destruction, thereby either limiting the formation of herpes lesions or preventing them altogether.
• An alkaline and oxygen rich cellular environment will prevent viral replication.

 

Diet and Lysine. 

Both L-Lysine and L-Arginine are essential amino acids. The human body cannot produce these amino acids, so they must be obtained either from the food we eat or from supplemental sources. As long as we have more Lysine than Arginine in our system, we’re in good shape. 

Some scientists recommend a 60/40 ratio for optimal results in dampening or preventing herpes viral replication. A sensible diet will enable us to maintain the correct balance between the two; therefore it’s important for us to be able to identify Lysine rich/Arginine poor foods.
